there is nothing like pastels to bring me back to easter holidays as a child. the sweetness of jelly beans and robin's eggs. okay-- maybe i just think about easter candy, but it makes me nostalgic nonetheless. this spring, however, there is nothing sweet about pastels-- at least not trotting down a runway. inspired by the s/s 2010 collections by Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, pastels are reinvented-- soft, whispery yellows, pinks, blues and lavenders juxtaposed on modern silhouettes and graphic cuts. this 'aint your mom's pastel.

no, not that kind of nude-- you dirty birds. nude, "the color that almost isn't", has made its way back onto the runway and reclaimed its' name [after that horrible stint in the 80's as the pantyhose color of choice by working women and flash-dancers everywhere]. and, as like most things-- nudes have Chloe's s/s 2010 collection to thank for the come back. to try it, you'll have to be daring-- as this color is best pulled off in a full monochromatic look. but.... once you go nude, you never go back.

ah... i am never regretful when another year turns. let 'em fly, i say... i look forward to what is to come-- new chances, new opportunities, new wardrobe. while the turning of a new year brings forth a lot of "looking back"-- i prefer to skip all of that and revel in what is to come. for me, it is already all about spring 2010. my "spring look" is inspired by dries van noten s/s 2010 collection-- sportswear and ethnic prints. more specifically, a soft, roomy sweatshirt layered over an ethnic print maxi dress or full skirt.

one of my favorite blogs, fashion gone rogue, did a year-end review of the best fashion campaigns. i definitely think that there was an overall winner in the best campaign of the year-- and although i am bias toward this artist-- ryan mcginley's take on missoni's fall 2009 collection was both fashion statement and art collection. i love the clarity and space his portraiture embodies-- and the simple landscaping mixed with the many layers of missoni.... beautiful.

finally-- the weather has allowed me to wear a scarf as a part of my everyday uniform. i no longer melt half way through the day and shed layers like fur-- it is crisp, cool, autumn. and no autumn outfit is complete without a scarf. here are three that i "shopped" off of netaporter.com:

now, i am a fan of all fashion over all cultures and respect the differences. with that said, no one does the scarf like the frenchies. when jeff and i were in paris last, a frenchie girl [working in a scarf shop, no less] taught me how to tie a proper fashion scarf. stretch the scarf out length-wise behind your neck, and wrap twice-- leaving an unraveled end on each side. then, to complete, tie in a little knot and pull to loosen like a big blanket around your neck. designers are making scarves to copy this look that are one piece that you lay around your neck-- but we all know it's not the same. here are three great frenchie looks from thesartorialist:

bodysuits made their way back onto the runway-- in a big way-- for fall 2009. being a big-time vintage girl, i've always loved a good bodysuit paired with a high-waisted wrap skirt in the summer. for an updated look for fall, designers used mesh and silks and paired with nothing but heels. to transition off the runway [for any and all of you more modest shoppers out there] try pairing a bodysuit with a menswear pant and cropped cardigan.

i am not much of a print girl. i never got into polka dots, geometrical shaping or animal prints. stripes, on the other hand, is my print weakness. i think a good striped blouse or knit top is all you need to pull an outfit from bland to chic. and stripes are equally owned by multiple fashion classes: sailor prep, punk rock, indie kids. fashion snobs and chic geeks alike. if it starts to feel too summery and nautical, transition stripes into your wardrobe for fall by deepening your color choice-- black and white versus navy, maroon and brown over red, etc.

don't discredit this mary kate and ashley olsen line due to designer affiliation alone-- for those of you [you dirty birds] who don't share that same MKA bond that I hold so deep and dear. i always keep my eye out for boutiques that carry this label-- while the designs are as simple as the color palette, there is something uniquely sophisticated, yet deconstructed, about their pieces.

Okay, so I know I have featured Dries Van Noten-- a lot-- so far.... but what you are about to see is the reason why. His collection for F/W 2009 represents so much of what other designers are missing-- the simple glamour and easy chicness women want in a wardrobe.

His collection takes from shades of Francis Bacon paintings and has created a modern look that is also quite timeless. While there are pieces that feature quite heavy prints-- my favorite are the simples rooted in pink, beige and orange with deep reds and mauves.

Get ready to want to go change your entire wardrobe for the season ahead-- I already have been scouring my favorites for a knee-length camel coat.

To one day have a little store of my very own. To neatly fold clothing and dress forms and wrap pretty clothes in pretty paper and fill out sales ledgers and ring sales to click my nails against buttons. Of my very own.
